Students, faculty assist Detroit's vaccination effort“These dedicated students show us what is possible when we come together as a community to help those in need,” said WSU Applebaum Associate Professor and Director of Research Paul Kilgore, who is among the faculty helping with logistics. “These efforts will be key to helping bring an end to the COVID-19 pandemic and assist communities in returning to their best health.”

Upcoming workshop will broaden interprofessional experience for WSU Applebaum studentsOn Jan. 26 and 28, 2021, nearly 300 students from across WSU Applebaum will participate in a virtual workshop that has been carefully designed to cover various IPE core competencies including roles and responsibilities, values and ethics, communication and cultural competence.

Future physician assistant Joe Tocco tests his mettle on COVID-19 front lines“I felt like I was in the exact right position to help,” Joe Tocco said. “Not everyone in the health care field can expose themselves to hundreds of potentially contagious patients and be relatively sure they’ll be OK. I’m young and healthy, and my parents and brother aren’t high-risk. I wasn’t going to just sit back and watch it all happen when I could help.”

Interprofessional Home Visit (IPTV) program teaches team care for older adultsIPTV introduces Wayne State’s social work, medical, nursing, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy and physician assistant students, as well as University of Detroit Mercy’s dental students, to team care for older adults. Students learn how to assess an older adult’s health and social needs and to participate in an interdisciplinary team environment.

2001 Physician Assistant Studies graduate honored by Crain's Detroit BusinessAlumna Kimberly Hurst was named as a 2020 Health Care Hero. She founded Wayne County SAFE in 2006 to provide crisis intervention, advocacy and counseling services on a 24/7 basis at no charge to sexual assault survivors. The nonprofit has served more than 16,000 people over the past 14 years.

CBS News: Alumnus Ryan Desgrange '08 discusses the PA's role during COVID-19In March, Desgrange worked to transition an inpatient orthopedic unit at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit into a COVID-19 unit. As a director in the hospital system, he redeployed his team of 19 PAs and three nurse practitioners to various sites, including triage tents to test people for the virus.

Ask a Mentor series helps prospective students explore health sciences career optionsOn May 28-29 and June 11-12, a series of four one-hour virtual Q&A sessions will connect prospective students with those currently studying health sciences. Each panel will answer questions about their program — including physician assistant studies, physical therapy, radiologic technology and nurse anesthesia — and offer admission tips.

Physician Assistant students volunteer at 9th annual Men’s Health Event at Ford FieldForty-eight Wayne State University physician assistant studies (PAS) students, along with a few faculty members, volunteered at the 9th Annual Men’s Health Event at Ford Field on Friday, Sept. 21. The event is hosted by the Men’s Institute of Urology and provides men in Detroit and surrounding areas a better understanding of how to stay healthy, free health screenings to assess their current health and information about advances in healthcare.
