GALLERY: Wayne State STEM Day 2023Wayne State University hosted nearly 2,500 students and teachers from 27 metro Detroit middle schools for a day of hands-on STEM activities across campus. WSU Applebaum participated with interactive sessions on medical laboratory science, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, radiation therapy technology and radiologic technology. Students had a blast concocting their own Warrior Lotion, helping a skeleton move, using surgical techniques to remove objects from Jell-O and more!

Dr. Sara F. Maher appointed as permanent associate dean for health sciencesDr. Maher had served as interim associate dean for health sciences since January 2022, assuming oversight of nine clinical programs, which include Clinical Laboratory Science, Mortuary Science, Pathologists’ Assistant, Nurse Anesthesia, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Radiation Therapy Technology and Radiologic Technology. During this time, she has also stepped up to lead the Office of Student Affairs on an interim basis.

See one, do one, teach one: Sara Lolar brings expertise and enthusiasm to WSU Applebaum’s Physician Assistant Studies programEven though she’s now at the front of the classroom, Assistant Clinical Professor of Physician Assistant Studies Sara Lolar’s passion for learning remains. “In medicine, we’re constantly learning and teaching, teaching and learning," she said. “There’s that model: See one, do one, teach one. First you observe a procedure, then you perform it on your own, then you train someone else on it. That’s my whole life.”

GALLERY: Physician Assistant students, Special Olympics partner for pediatric screenings in DetroitWSU Applebaum Physician Assistant students had the opportunity to partner with Special Olympics of Michigan and Special Olympics International on May 21, 2022, at Detroit Day School for the Deaf, by piloting a pediatric screening exam for Detroit families. Screenings were offered to children ages 2-7, with the goal of identifying early developmental delays and connecting families with needed local resources, equipment and care.
