Community Homeless Interprofessional Program clinic honored for 10 years of service in DetroitOn Feb. 13, WSU Applebaum was honored by Cathedral Church of St. Paul for a decade of care for unhoused Detroiters through the Community Homeless Interprofessional Program (CHIP) clinic. Pharmacy and physical therapy students and faculty members joined Wayne State President Kimberly Andrews Espy, PhD, for a Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner and award presentation. The two doctoral-level programs partner with their university peers in medicine and social work to offer health evaluations, education and resource connections.

Doctoral student Taylor Takla wins Whitaker Prize for Young InvestigatorsTaylor Takla, a doctoral student in Dr. Nora Fritz's Neuroimaging and Neurorehabilitation Lab, was honored with the Whitaker Prize for Young Investigators at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers Annual Meeting in Denver this week. The prize is presented annually to an emerging scientist whose work is judged to have substantial promise in increasing the understanding of multiple sclerosis.

Honorees must demonstrate abilities to advise, support, sponsor and inspire graduate students in making progress toward completion of their degrees and becoming members of a larger professional community.

Michigan Medicine: Paige Senn, DPT '21, helps teen with rare neuromuscular disorder slow disease progressionUntil there's a treatment, Maggie will be working with her physical therapist, Paige Senn, to keep her muscles healthy and hold the symptoms at bay. Senn will be creating physical therapy plans to strengthen the teen’s muscles and slow their atrophy. "It's important to be mindful of the types of muscle contractions she is doing so nothing is damaged further," Senn said. "A good gauge for the intensity of the exercise is to make sure she can hold a conversation during these activities." Senn has created a physical therapy regiment that helps Maggie Eggleston find ways to do the tasks that she has struggled doing, such as pulling her hair up or playing the violin.

GALLERY: Wayne State STEM Day 2023Wayne State University hosted nearly 2,500 students and teachers from 27 metro Detroit middle schools for a day of hands-on STEM activities across campus. WSU Applebaum participated with interactive sessions on medical laboratory science, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, radiation therapy technology and radiologic technology. Students had a blast concocting their own Warrior Lotion, helping a skeleton move, using surgical techniques to remove objects from Jell-O and more!
