Doctoral student Taylor Takla wins Whitaker Prize for Young InvestigatorsTaylor Takla, a doctoral student in Dr. Nora Fritz's Neuroimaging and Neurorehabilitation Lab, was honored with the Whitaker Prize for Young Investigators at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers Annual Meeting in Denver this week. The prize is presented annually to an emerging scientist whose work is judged to have substantial promise in increasing the understanding of multiple sclerosis.

Dr. Moh Malek becomes first Health Care Sciences faculty member awarded Outstanding Graduate Mentor by Wayne StateSince 1994, the Outstanding Graduate Mentor award has been presented to graduate faculty recognized by their department and graduate students as excellent graduate mentors. Honorees must demonstrate abilities to advise, support, sponsor and inspire graduate students in making progress toward completion of their degrees and becoming members of a larger professional community.

Michigan Medicine: Paige Senn, DPT '21, helps teen with rare neuromuscular disorder slow disease progressionUntil there's a treatment, Maggie will be working with her physical therapist, Paige Senn, to keep her muscles healthy and hold the symptoms at bay. Senn will be creating physical therapy plans to strengthen the teen’s muscles and slow their atrophy. "It's important to be mindful of the types of muscle contractions she is doing so nothing is damaged further," Senn said. "A good gauge for the intensity of the exercise is to make sure she can hold a conversation during these activities." Senn has created a physical therapy regiment that helps Maggie Eggleston find ways to do the tasks that she has struggled doing, such as pulling her hair up or playing the violin.

Wayne State Academic Recognition Ceremony celebrates WSU Applebaum faculty excellenceFaculty and academic staff from across campus were celebrated for their contributions to the university, academic community and professional development at the Academic Recognition Ceremony and reception on April 27 at the Student Center Building. Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Kyle Burghardt received a Career Development Chair award and Professor of Physical Therapy Moh Malek received an Outstanding Graduate Mentor Award.

GALLERY: Wayne State STEM Day 2023Wayne State University hosted nearly 2,500 students and teachers from 27 metro Detroit middle schools for a day of hands-on STEM activities across campus. WSU Applebaum participated with interactive sessions on medical laboratory science, occupational therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant studies, radiation therapy technology and radiologic technology. Students had a blast concocting their own Warrior Lotion, helping a skeleton move, using surgical techniques to remove objects from Jell-O and more!

This is program is designed to promote research activities for junior and new faculty researchers. Applicants may submit only one proposal per year as either the PI (Principal Investigator) or Co-I (Co-Investigator / faculty research mentor).

Dr. Sara F. Maher appointed as permanent associate dean for health sciencesDr. Maher had served as interim associate dean for health sciences since January 2022, assuming oversight of nine clinical programs, which include Clinical Laboratory Science, Mortuary Science, Pathologists’ Assistant, Nurse Anesthesia, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Physician Assistant Studies, Radiation Therapy Technology and Radiologic Technology. During this time, she has also stepped up to lead the Office of Student Affairs on an interim basis.
