Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences postdoctoral researchers Dr. Dana Holger and Dr. David Henning have been selected by the Wayne State University Graduate School as recipients of the 2022 Postdoctoral Trainee Research Awards.

Dr. Dana Holger began her Infectious Diseases Pharmacotherapy Fellowship appointment with Dr. Michael J. Rybak in his Anti-Infective Research Laboratory in July 2020, with an expected completion date this July. She earned her PharmD at Nova Southeastern University in Florida and is in the last year of her master’s in public health program at WSU.

“Antimicrobial stewardship research has been recognized for its significant importance in current clinical practice,” said Holger, who has taken a leading role in designing, implementing and evaluating antimicrobial stewardship interventions, as well as successfully competing for external grants to fund current research. “The use of health outcomes research to optimize stewardship endeavors has become integral in improving the delivery of health care services.”

Dr. David Henning is in the second year of his Postdoctoral Research Fellowship with Dr. Nora E. Fritz in her Neuroimaging and Neurorehabilitation Laboratory. He completed his PhD in kinesiology at Michigan State University in 2020.

“My primary research interests are in the areas of kinesiological psychology, neurocognitive kinesiology, and the relationships between physical activity, affect and cognition,” Henning said. “This has led to my involvement in multiple projects, including a current project using neuroimaging to determine the relationships between mobility, physical activity and cognition in persons with multiple sclerosis. In the future, I am particularly interested in researching underserved individuals suffering from mental health issues such as ADHD, anxiety and depression, and those with cerebral palsy and other physical and mental disabilities.”

The WSU Graduate School presents the Postdoctoral Trainee Research Awards annually to postdoctoral trainees at Wayne State who have shown outstanding promise in scientific research. Holger and Henning will be honored with certificates and $250 awards in March.
