Student Spotlight: Q&A with James McLean, Doctor of Physical Therapy Class of 2023

We're getting to know students from every program at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Submit your own details for Student Spotlight consideration by filling out our brief form.

Q: What are three words that best describe you?James McLean

A: Animated, calming and relatable.

Q: What are your hobbies or interests?

A: In my free time, I love to watch anime shows. They’re created in Japan and often translated into English. There are a plethora of genres to keep anyone interested. I also enjoy going for walks when it’s not freezing out.

Q: Why did you choose Wayne State University?

A: I came to WSU for my undergraduate studies, and was the first person in my immediate family to complete a bachelor’s degree. A lot of my friends who are physical therapists graduated from WSU and they’re amazing therapists. Additionally, I am a Detroit native.

Q: What led you to this field of study?

A: My sister has severe cerebral palsy, and she often went to both occupational and physical therapy. Seeing how therapy really increased my sister's quality of life made me want to do the same for others. Additionally, my father had a laminectomy which unfortunately resulted in bilateral paresis of his arms. This led him to go to therapy where I worked as a rehab tech which solidified my resolve to become a physical therapist. I want to help as many people as I can improve or restore their quality of life.

Q: Tell us about an academic experience that you enjoyed.

A: One of my favorite clinical experiences was when I got to treat an entire caseload of PTS in one morning, essentially on my own. I really felt like I was starting to put the pieces together of what I’ve been learning this entire time.Doctor of Physical Therapy logo

Q: If you had 24 hours free from work and school obligations, how would you spend your day?

A: With only 24 hours, I think I would still study — but I would go find somewhere to eat and get a drink.

Q: Share a recent accomplishment that made you proud of yourself.

A: One of my major accomplishments that actually made me proud is doing well in my classes so far. I was so nervous coming into graduate school and wondering if I was good enough, and I’m showing that I am.

Q: What are your career aspirations?

A: Eventually, I want to be in some form of leadership over a rehab facility. I would like to work my way up to director in a hospital setting or even my own clinic.

WSU Applebaum information meetings for prospective students take place at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. The Doctor of Physical Therapy program application process opens July 1 and the deadline is Oct. 15.
