Wayne State’s World Health Student Organization (WHSO) and Arab American Pharmacists Association (AAPA) collaborated over the past year to raise money for the less fortunate in Lebanon.

“We were heartbroken following the tragedy of the Beirut Port explosion of 2020,” said WHSO President Ayah Habhab, PharmD ’23. “This catastrophic event left an estimated 300,000 people homeless, many of whom were children. Lebanon was truly in distress. Our organizations came together to express our sorrows and discuss ways we could provide relief.”

The groups raised funds by creating flyers explaining the cause, and hanging them around campus and their communities. They also took to social media and created a donation bingo game on Instagram. Each time a donation was made, a circle on the bingo card was crossed off with the person’s Instagram handle. “This game was a big hit so we continued to do this for months with huge success,” Habhab said.

Their efforts resulted in a $2,000 donation to the Al-Mabarrat Foundation in Dearborn. Al-Mabarrat is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational, health and welfare assistance to orphans in Lebanon, where it supports 15 schools and nine orphanages, teaching 22,000 students and hosting approximately 4,000 orphans.
