Student pharmacists encouraged to join AMCP annual P&T Competition – sign up by this Friday, Dec. 16“Student pharmacists should join the P&T Competition because of the real-life clinical application experience it provides. Oftentimes, we deal with issues with formularies and prior authorizations as pharmacists with no true understanding of the science behind it,” said WSU AMCP Chapter President Jackie Fleury. “In addition to exposing students to a different side of pharmacy, the P&T Competition provides us with the opportunity to gain understanding about the process of introducing newer drugs to the public and providing patient access to potential better, more cost-effective therapies. This enhances our communication efforts both across disciplines and within our patient populations, ultimately improving patient outcomes.”

Wayne State's World Health Student Organization and Arab American Pharmacists Association raise $2K to support less fortunate in Lebanon“We were heartbroken following the tragedy of the Beirut Port explosion of 2020,” said WHSO President Ayah Habhab, PharmD ’23. “This catastrophic event left an estimated 300,000 people homeless, many of whom were children. Lebanon was truly in distress. Our organizations came together to express our sorrows and discuss ways we could provide relief.”

FAWN strengthens partnerships in preparation for World AIDS Day on Thursday, Dec. 1World AIDS Day presents an opportunity for people across the globe to unite in the fight against HIV, to show support for those living with HIV, and to commemorate those who have died from an AIDS-related illness. Founded in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first-ever global health day. To commemorate World AIDS Day this year, WSU Applebaum’s Fighting AIDS with Nutrition (FAWN) student organization is once again organizing events on campus to spread awareness about the HIV/AIDS epidemic and support its global and local outreach programs that help patients living with HIV/AIDS.

Student Pharmacists Diversity Council addresses transgender awareness with pronoun pin sale“When we use pronouns such as he, she, his, hers, they or their to address others or ourselves, we’re contributing to a person’s identity. Pronouns are a way in which we categorize those around us, but most of us don’t stop to consider what happens when our identity clashes with how others identify with us. Something as simple as affirmation of a person’s identity can lead to better health outcomes for patients," said Johnie L. Bailey, SPDC co-director of cultural education.

Student Pharmacists Diversity Council brings health care screenings to Midwest Buddhist Center“The mission of SPDC promotes the value of diversity in the health care field by promoting unity and creating a culturally inclusive environment among health care professionals and patients alike,” said SPDC President Linh Pham. “Our organization served the temple community, which allowed our student pharmacists to interact with a different community outside of Wayne State. As the health fair’s attendees were mostly of Thai culture, it was a great opportunity for our members to learn more about their culture while providing health care services. Through outreach events like these, SPDC works to create culturally competent providers and while addressing health disparities in various communities.”

Other services offered during the health fair were nutrition and lifestyle counseling, mental health and addiction counseling, mobility screenings, dental exams, chair massages, and hygiene kit distribution.

Wayne State IPhO chapter places 8th in national VIP Case Competition“This accomplishment is a milestone for our IPhO chapter, as we established our chapter just over a year ago and this was the first time Wayne State IPhO competed in the VIP Case Competition,” said WSU IPhO President Joseph Paul Javier. “The competition offers IPhO chapters an opportunity to participate in a national event that encourages student pharmacists to hone their critical thinking skills, promote teamwork and foster leadership development.”
