Biography

From 2002-2012, my research team studied drug interventions that improved the health-outcomes of patients undergoing cardiac surgery at The University of Kansas Health System. We sought to mitigate postoperative complications in this population, specifically focusing on arrythmias, hypertension, and bleeding. In 2012, I was appointed Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy and charged with overseeing a faculty-led assessment and revision of our Doctor of Pharmacy curriculum and the degree program’s accreditation. Following the completion of this administrative work, I returned to the faculty in 2019 to reestablish a research program. 

In 2021, I was granted a Researcher Without Compensation (WOC) appointment within the Veterans Affairs (VA) research enterprise. This provides access to the VA’s Corporate Data Warehouse, containing the health records of veterans in this nationwide health system. This unique dataset, contains both inpatient and outpatient data, making it possible to evaluate the impact of acute care treatment decisions on long-term health outcomes.

In 2023, I joined the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at Wayne State University. At present, my research program evaluates the long-term clinical outcomes of those suffering critical illness. Our research group is currently advancing what is known about drug interventions in the intensive care unit and their impact on long-term health outcomes, specifically among those who experience distributive shock after surgery or serious infection (e.g. sepsis, COVID-19). To date, research in this population has largely focused on short-term health outcomes (e.g. acute resolution of disease, time to ICU discharge, hospital mortality, etc). Increased awareness of a Post Intensive Care Syndrome (PICS) has motivated our group to study the long-term consequences of critical illness and its management. We seek to better understand what impact acute care drug interventions have on quality of life after hospital discharge, hospital readmission, one-year mortality, health economics, and other relevant clinical outcomes. The overarching goal of this work is to improve the quality of life of patients who survive critical illness.
