WSU Applebaum Tour de Cure team raising money for diabetes research

Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Zhengping Yi invites the WSU Applebaum community to join the Wayne Care team in the Tour de Cure Michigan, which takes place Sunday, Sept. 8, on Belle Isle in Detroit. Participants may take part in a 3-mile walk or a bike ride of 10, 30 or 60 miles.

Tour de Cure is the signature fundraising event of the American Diabetes Association, which provides community-based education programs, protects the rights of people with diabetes and funds critical research for a cure.

Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder and the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults. In the United States, 30.3 million individuals (9.4% of the U.S. population) have diabetes, leading to more than $200 billion in health care costs annually per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Alarmingly, projections indicate that the diabetes prevalence will increase to ~30% by 2050.
