PharmSci accepting applications for Summer Undergraduate Research Fellows (SURF) programUndergraduates in the 12-week program receive a $4500 stipend. Openings are available in medicinal chemistry, pharmacology and toxicology, and pharmaceutics (drug delivery) laboratories. The deadline to apply is May 20, 2022.

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences Alumni News: Letter from the ChairOur faculty, staff and students have done astonishingly well during this challenging time. Our students were some of the first to safely return to research labs and did so with empathy for others. Our faculty worked hard to meet the needs of the professional pharmacy students and redoubled their efforts to keep graduate students on track and focused on their degrees. Our staff worked tirelessly to make sure that the department was moving forward and that no one was left behind. I am in awe of their efforts.

Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Wanqing Liu to play key role in $4.3M award to increase state's infectious diseases preparednessThe Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $4.3 million to the Wayne State University Center for Emerging and Infectious Diseases. The funds will increase lab facilities to collect and analyze genomic data to address emerging infectious disease threats and enhance the state’s ability to respond to those threats. In addition to Dr. Liu's involvement, Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice Paul Kilgore is a center director.

Dr. Janardan B. Nagwekar, pioneering Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty member, dies at 90Dr. Nagwekar was instrumental in launching the Pharmaceutical Sciences PhD program in the 1960s and 1970s, as he trained many of the college’s first PhD students.

Wayne State University joins URC partners in mandating vaccination for all students, faculty and staff coming to campus"As we have from the beginning of the pandemic, we are today revising our campus response to respond to emerging evidence and local data. To best protect the health and safety of our campus community, Wayne State will require all students, faculty and staff who plan to be on campus during the fall semester to receive their COVID-19 vaccination. Proof of your vaccination must be submitted by Aug. 30 for you to be allowed on campus," said WSU President M. Roy Wilson.

Masks are required inside WSU buildings now through Sept. 15 for everyone, regardless of vaccination status"Full vaccination of our campus community will eventually eliminate the need for masks and allow a renewed sense of normalcy in our interactions. Beginning today through Sept. 15, however, when we can be more confident in our overall vaccination status, masks will be required indoors for everyone, regardless of vaccination status," said WSU President M. Roy Wilson. "At that point, we will revisit the mask requirement, and hopefully eliminate it. Of course, masks will not be required if you are working alone in your office. We recognize that this is inconvenient, but it is temporary, and more important, safe."

Dr. Brian Cummings '99 assumes role as WSU Applebaum dean on August 1On Aug. 1, 2021, Brian Cummings, PhD, assumes the role of dean of the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences and professor of pharmaceutical sciences. He succeeds Interim Dean and Professor of Occupational Therapy Dr. Cathy Lysack, who shepherded the college through significant changes associated with the COVID-19 pandemic during her three-year appointment.
