NIH awards $3M to WSU Applebaum's Dr. Wanqing Liu and Henry Ford Health to impact research on liver diseaseProfessor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Wanqing Liu, PhD, received a $3 million, five-year award from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences of the National Institutes of Health. The study, “Interaction between Genome and Heavy Metals in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease,” aims to discover and validate the gene Х heavy metal (GXM) interactions in human livers and to understand their role in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow, PhD, senior scientist and epidemiologist in the Department of Public Health Sciences at Henry Ford Health, is the co-principal investigator on the study.

DEI Council officially established by Wayne State, with WSU Applebaum's David Pitts and Heather Sandlin serving as membersThe Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council (DEI Council) is officially established under Wayne State University Policy 23-01 which was signed by former President M. Roy Wilson on July 27, 2023. The DEI Council’s purpose is to foster anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion at Wayne State University by assessing and reporting on the institution’s progress in these domains and by offering strategic advice to the Associate Provost and Chief Diversity Officer (AP-CDO). Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences David Pitts and Academic Services Officer Heather Sandlin are among those appointed to serve.

She took 5th place at the 59th annual Southeast Michigan Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium and will present her work at the national symposium in April.

Wayne State receives $2 million NIH award to purchase state-of-the-art MRI to study brain disorders“Over the past three decades, Wayne State’s community of MR imaging researchers have contributed important medical imaging technology breakthroughs, including MR sequence design and software development that has been adopted around the world,” said Dr. Timothy Stemmler, interim vice president for research at Wayne State and WSU Applebaum professor of pharmaceutical sciences. “Our researchers are studying the microvasculature of grey and white matter tissue in neurological conditions and disorders like multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease, as well as other important research areas such as the impact of stress, trauma and substance use on brain function. These and other research studies will greatly benefit from the investment in the new 3T PRISMA MRI and its state-of-the-art features.”
