WSU represented at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy 2022 National Conference

Last week, Wayne State University sent its first delegation of student pharmacists to the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) 2022 annual national convention. This year’s event was held at the McCormick Place Lakeside Center in Chicago – the largest convention center in North America – and attracted thousands of managed care decision-makers and pharmacy students passionate about careers in managed care.

Attendees engaged in over 20 immersive education sessions, as well as thought-provoking keynote presentations and quality networking opportunities covering the most pressing topics impacting managed care pharmacy. These sessions focused on up-to-date content that will shape the future of the industry. In addition, the conference included 14 satellite symposia, faculty chats with key health care leaders, and an Expo with more than 85 exhibitors showcasing the latest innovations and newest products to improve patient outcomes and job performance. 

“AMCP 2022 offered pharmacy students and professionals alike opportunities to network and hear about the latest moves being made by influential pharmaceutical companies,” said Johnie L. Bailey, professional education co-chair for Wayne State’s AMCP chapter. “The event saw leaders in managed care pharmacy showcase their latest research on relevant topics such as the opioid crisis and innovations in health care delivery. The convention offered an in-depth insight into what managed care pharmacy can be for aspiring professionals that may not know that other opportunities exist in the scope of pharmacy careers. If community practice or working in a hospital is not for you, I highly recommend those student pharmacists to join AMCP and attend its conventions.”

Wayne State AMCP Chapter President Joseph Paul Javier was awarded the AMCP Midwest Regional Scholarship at the Expo for his accomplishments in leadership and educating the public about managed care pharmacy, and how it greatly impacts health care and patient outcomes. Expo attendees included representatives from health plans, pharmacy benefit managers, biopharmaceutical companies, consultants and other leaders working within managed care pharmacy.

“The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy is all about optimizing medicine and improving lives by ensuring access to high-quality, cost-effective medications and other therapies. I am honored to receive this award,” said Javier. “I am thankful to our Wayne State AMCP chapter leaders as well as to AMCP Midwest President Dr. Manjula Jayabalan for encouraging me to apply for this scholarship. Our WSU chapter is still in its fledgling stage, but we have grown so much in the past two and half years. I look forward to seeing our chapter continue its growth and helping spread awareness about opportunities for pharmacists in the managed care landscape.” 

WSU AMCP Treasurer Niharika Thota said, “My favorite part of AMCP 2022 was meeting new people, finding out how they got involved in AMCP, and how student pharmacists leveraged these experiences when applying for residencies. It was great to hear the stories of every individual I met since everyone had a different story to tell. Attending the chapter leadership academy, I got to learn the importance of participating in the P&T competition perennially. I spoke to so many pharmacists working in Eli Lily, Active Radar and other firms. The LinkedIn/CV writing session and various education symposiums were other great resources that I made sure to attend.”

AMCP is the professional association leading the way to help patients get the medications they need at a cost they can afford. AMCP’s diverse membership of pharmacists, physicians, nurses, biopharmaceutical professionals, and other stakeholders leverage their specialized expertise in clinical evidence and economics to optimize medication benefit design and population health management and help patients access cost-effective and safe medications and other drug therapies. AMCP members improve the lives of nearly 300 million Americans served by private and public health plans, pharmacy benefit management firms, and emerging care models.

The Doctor of Pharmacy program at Wayne State University is a four-year curriculum in the heart of Detroit. Approximately 100 students are enrolled in each year of the program. WSU Applebaum information meetings for prospective students take place at 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month. The application process for the Doctor of Pharmacy program begins in July.
