Health Care Sciences smashes competition in WSU Applebaum Heart Walk fundraising competition

A triumphant Health Care Sciences Chair Sara Maher celebrates her victory with the support of Dean Cathy Lysack, while Pharmacy Practice Chair Lynette Moser, Pharmaceutical Sciences Chair George Corcoran, and Associate Dean for Health Sciences Peter Frade (representing Applied Health Sciences), feel the shame.

The 26th annual Metro Detroit Heart Walk and Stroke Walk/Run was held on Wayne State University’s campus on Saturday, May 18; the event's primary goal is fundraising for heart disease and stroke research. To help drum up donations, the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences launched a competition to determine – based on dollars raised and walk participation – which department is the 2019 "Best in the College," including a year's worth of bragging rights.

The undeniable winner was Health Care Sciences led by Chair Sara Maher, who – although she stopped short of making them bow down before her – brought a bag stuffed with HCS gear to the celebratory photo shoot for the downtrodden losing chairs to wear, adding salt to their wounds and fanning the flames of revenge.

Totals by department were:

  • Health Care Sciences, $497
  • Pharmaceutical Sciences, $350
  • Pharmacy Practice, $195
  • Applied Health Sciences, $0

In addition, the Dean's Office raised $630, but everyone agreed that – being the "boss team" – they had an unfair advantage and wouldn't participate in the competition.

In total, WSU Applebaum well exceeded its Heart Walk fundraising goal of $1,500. Special kudos go to WSU Applebaum's Heart Walk coordinator Daisy Wright and Marissa Rossman for orchestrating the college's participation in the event, as well as to fundraising competition organizer Tim Stemmler, who absolutely relished pitting the chairs against each other.

While Maher does her victory lap, vengeance is on the horizon. The other departments will have a chance at dethroning the champion when the Heart Walk comes back around in 2020 – but until then, Health Care Sciences is hereby named the BEST DEPARTMENT IN THE COLLEGE.
