Containing COVID-19 with Vaccines: How are we doing and what more can be done? set for June 9

The Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Office of Faculty Affairs and Professional Development will host a session on the current status of COVID-19 vaccines June 9.

The presentation, which will take place from noon to 1 p.m. via Zoom, will identify and describe current COVID-19 trends and disease burden, identify and describe approved COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines in development, and describe opportunities and tools for addressing vaccine hesitancy.

The speakers will include Paul Kilgore, M.P.H., M.D., associate professor and director of Research at the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Marcus Zervos, M.D., division head of Infectious Diseases at the Henry Ford Health System and assistant dean of Global Affairs and professor of Internal Medicine at the School of Medicine.

Drs. Kilgore and Zervos have worked with the Detroit mayor's office and Detroit Health Department on a variety of issues, including expanding testing capacity, mobile testing, and control of COVID-19 in vulnerable populations, nursing homes and homeless shelters.

Dr. Kilgore has worked in medicine and public health for more than 25 years. He is the author of “The COVID-19 Survival Guide,” which describes how the coronavirus may affect us and what we can do to successfully fight the virus. He is the principal investigator of the Henry Ford Health System's novel coronavirus vaccine trial.

Dr. Zervos has worked with vulnerable populations internationally, building sustainable capacity in a variety of platforms. His work locally has included water safety and Legionnaire’s disease in Flint, and more recently COVID-19 work in Detroit. He was appointed COVID-19 advisor to Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan’s office.
