Applebaum Leadership Development Program supports the next generation of pharmacy leadersWhen a family member had taken ill, Obioma Opara ’22 saw how the leadership of a pharmacist can make a difference. "My mother-in-law's pharmacist noticed a drug she had been prescribed could have had a dangerous interaction with another medication she was taking," Opara said. "This one guy caught that, but there are too many other people who do not have someone to notice interactions like that. I believe in trying to make a change, one patient at a time. So hopefully, when I am a pharmacist, I can be 'that one guy' and influence people's lives."

A model for others: Linda Ford Lane scholarship supports women in pharmacyLinda Ford Lane ’52, was a model for women in pharmacy. One of only a few women graduating in the Wayne State University College of Pharmacy class of 1952, she was a pioneer in her field. In recognition of that contribution, an anonymous donor has established an endowed scholarship in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences promoting a commitment to the study and practice of pharmacy by women.

GALLERY: International Overdose Awareness Day in Detroit '23On Aug. 31, 2023, Professor of Pharmacy Practice Victoria Tutag Lehr partnered with Wayne State’s Michigan Poison & Drug Information Center, MiPDC Coalition for Poison Prevention, AmeriCorps Overdose Rescue Training and the National Guard’s Michigan Counter Drug Taskforce for community outreach in the Spirit of Detroit Park Plaza during International Overdose Awareness Day. The group provided information on common drugs of misuse, overdose prevention, the importance of carrying naloxone to reverse an overdose situation in the community, appropriate medication disposal, and resources for treatment and recovery. Booth visitors were encouraged to write thoughts on a remembrance board, and several people shared their lived experiences with overdose and continued recovery. “It was a beautiful, sunny day and food trucks brought out the lunch crowd,” said Dr. Tutag Lehr. “We had a successful day at Spirit Plaza thanks to our strong collaboration. Next up: working together on a project to place public-access naloxone boxes throughout metro Detroit.”

At the event, Associate Clinical Professor Dennis Parker was honored for completing AACP Academic Leadership Fellows Program, Clinical Professor Christopher Giuliano presented research in a session, and Chair Lynette Moser and Associate Clinical Professor Helen Berlie shared a poster.

Pharmacy Practice News: Prof. Candice Garwood on national plan to reduce hospital readmissions for heart failure“Heart failure therapy is often a complex regimen,” Garwood said. “Following the guidelines and optimizing therapy is a challenge for the clinicians, and understanding those therapies and taking them [correctly] and adhering to those therapies are challenges for patients.”

Wayne State Lambda Kappa Sigma earns back-to-back Chapter of the Year honors at national conventionWayne State’s Omicron chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma went into the pharmacy fraternity’s 2023 National Convention as the reigning Chapter of the Year and left with that title intact. In addition to that high honor at the July 19-23 event in Norfolk, Virginia, 2021-22 Chapter President Jewel Konja earned the very competitive Collegiate of the Year award, plus Omicron won Top Chapter among Wayne State’s level and swept the convention’s two new awards: PepTalks Attendance and PepTalks Top Quiz.

Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Candice Garwood appointed to American College of Clinical Pharmacy Board of Regents for three-year term beginning Nov. 14Dr. Garwood was chosen as ACCP regent in the annual elections this spring. In addition to her WSU Applebaum PharmD position, Garwood is a clinical pharmacy specialist at Harper University Hospital, part of the Detroit Medical Center. Her three-year Board of Regents term begins Nov. 14, 2023.

Student pharmacists: Volunteer for weekly Detroit Riverwalk health screenings this summer – see link in album captionEach Tuesday morning throughout the summer, WSU Applebaum student pharmacists volunteer their time to provide blood pressure screenings for community members strolling along the picturesque Detroit Riverwalk. For this collaborative effort with the WSU School of Medicine, Dr. Rima Charara serves as adjunct faculty preceptor and PharmD student leaders are Sama Ali and Noorhan Sabbagh.

Davis"A one-time test is redundant with the efforts of pharmacy schools and employers," Davis said. "Pharmacy schools include pharmacy law and ethics as a standard part of our curricula, so every graduating pharmacist has passed competency assessments and had that knowledge reinforced in direct practice experiences. Pharmacy employers already have staff development activities in place to ensure appropriate standard of care and adherence to all regulatory standards and laws."

The purpose of this certificate training program was to prepare pharmacists to improve medication use through the delivery of MTM services in a variety of practice settings.

"What do you want to achieve? You don't want to be at the mercy of anybody, right? So you put on the lion's hat, and you say, 'I can do this.' There's nothing in this world that is not achievable if you put your mind to it."

Infectious Disease Special Edition: Dr. Susan Davis and former ARL Fellow Jacinda Abdul-Mutakabbir on correcting disparities in infectious disease care“It’s my hope that you are able to describe the relationship between systemic racism and social determinants of health when providing treatment to patients with infections, and also identify the factors in antimicrobial resistance, or stewardship processes and policies that could result into disparities in care,” said Dr. Abdul-Mutakabbir, an assistant professor of clinical pharmacy in the Division of the Black Diaspora and African American Studies, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, at the University of California, San Diego. Associate Dean for Pharmacy Susan Davis added: “We are just scratching the surface of how social, racial and other factors influence how antimicrobials and other medications are used. Dr. Abdul-Mutakabbir makes a great point that if clinicians intend to reduce disparities, the first step is to measure differences and raise awareness of the need.”

Specialty Pharmacy Continuum: Dr. Amber Lanae Martirosov on pharmacist involvement improving drug adherence for interstitial lung disease“Ultimately, we plan to do a quasi-experimental analysis looking at time to drug initiation, rates of dose reductions and rate of discontinuation before and after adding a pharmacist to management,” Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice Amber Lanae Martirosov noted. “There have also been requests from providers who have seen what we have done with ILD to add our services to other diseases like sarcoidosis, rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis, so we are working with them to see if there is the possibility to embed a pharmacist in those clinics as well.”
