Core technical standards & competencies for admission and progression in the Pathologists' Assistant program

For individuals wishing to enter, or those students who expect to continue in the Pathologists' Assistant program, they must fulfill or demonstrate the following competencies:

Critical Thinking: Critical thinking ability sufficient for critical judgment.

Observation & Interpretation: Observation and interpretation skills sufficient for timely processing of surgical specimens for evaluation and diagnosis.

Interpersonal Skills: Interpersonal abilities sufficient to interact with individuals from a variety of social, emotional, and cultural backgrounds.

Communication: Communication abilities sufficient for interaction with others in written and verbal form.

Mobility: Physical abilities sufficient to move from room to room and maneuver in small spaces, go up and down several flights of stairs, and stand for a period of up to 8 hours per day.

Gross Motor Skills: Sufficient to move/lift 40-50 lbs.

Fine Motor Skills: Sufficient to provide safe and efficient service, possess manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.

Hearing Skills: Auditory ability sufficient for safe and efficient service.

Visual Skills: Sufficient for observation, color identification, and assessment of specimens.

Tactile Skills: Sufficient for physical assessment.

Professionalism: Promoting and modeling high professional standards, attitudes, skills and behaviors encouraging respect, integrity, altruism, responsibility, professional duty and excellence.
