At its annual meeting on Oct. 28, 2022, the Michigan Society of Health-System Pharmacists (MSHP) recognized four pharmacy leaders in Michigan with prestigious distinctions for notable contributions to their field - and all have ties to the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences!

Associate Clinical Professor of Pharmacy Practice Amber Lanae Martirosov won the 2022 MSHP Professional Practice Award for her work ensuring optimal patient care and efficiency on Henry Ford Health's multidisciplinary interstitial lung disease (ILD) team.

PharmD alumna and adjunct faculty member Lama Hsaiky '03 received the 2022 MSHP Joseph A. Oddis Leadership Award for her ongoing support of MSHP and the pharmacy profession, and her continual work to develop future pharmacists and health care professionals.

PharmD alumna Nada M. Farhat '15 was named the 2022 MSHP Pharmacist of the Year for her outstanding achievements and leadership that embodies a model for other health care professionals to follow.

The Henry Ford Health (HFH) Pharmacy Department in Detroit received the 2022 MSHP President's Award for its role in preventing gaps in care at discharge. The HFH Pharmacy Department is a practice site for several WSU Applebaum clinical faculty members, as well as preceptors, alumni and students.

WSU Applebaum faculty members also presented multiple continuing education sessions at the event. Associate Dean for Pharmacy Susan L. Davis led a general session titled "A Call to Action: What to do to Address Health Disparities and Equity in Your Daily Practice and Beyond" at the meeting. Michael Veve, Amber Martirosov and Christopher Giuliano presented a panel discussion of "Show Me the Money: An Introduction to Grant Funding.

Amber Lanae Martirosov, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP, won the 2022 Professional Practice Award for her work ensuring optimal patient care and efficiency on HFH's multidisciplinary Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) team.

Martirosov's pharmacy-led management of antifibrotics has decreased antifibrotic discontinuation rates, minimized therapy delays and decreased patient costs, while increasing health-system prescription volume and revenue. Martirosov's innovative work on this team supports multiple ASHP Practice Advancement Initiative 2030 recommendations, advances pharmacy practice at HFH and provides a framework for other health systems to expand pharmacy's role in managing ILD patients.

In addition to her role as associate clinical professor of pharmacy practice at WSU Applebaum, Martirosov is a clinical pharmacy specialist of ambulatory care and residency program director for the PGY2 ambulatory care program at HFH. She received her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2011 from the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Pharmacy and her Master of Pharmacotherapy in 2013 from the University of Texas College of Pharmacy.

The MSHP Professional Practice Award recognizes and honors a pharmacist, group of pharmacists or an organization for involvement and participation in an innovative project (e.g., published research, projects or services implemented) that contributes to professional practice. The award includes a plaque engraved with the legend, "For Excellence in Innovative Pharmacy Practice," and a one-year complimentary membership with MSHP.

Lama Hsaiky, PharmD, BCPS, received the 2022 MSHP Joseph A. Oddis Leadership Award for her ongoing support of MSHP and the pharmacy profession, and her continual work to develop future pharmacists and health care professionals of tomorrow.

Hsaiky has been recognized at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn (BHD) for her contributions to patient care outcomes and for creating new and innovative pharmacy-driven practice models that advance health-system pharmacy. At BHD, Hsaiky is the manager of pharmacy clinical services and quality and the PGY1 administrative coordinator, as well as the antimicrobial stewardship program corporate pharmacy lead for Beaumont Health System. Her work has included implementing ambulatory care services in internal medicine and oncology clinics, emergency room pharmacy services, transitions-of-care services, geriatric clinical pharmacy services, and a program focusing on social determinants of health and the impact on patient outcomes and readmissions. Hsaiky mentors and supports pharmacists' personal and professional growth as a vital partner and leader for the many students receiving experiential education at her practice site.

Hsaiky received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2003 from WSU Applebaum, where she is now an adjunct professor of pharmacy practice. She started her career at HFH, where she worked as a clinical pharmacy specialist in transplant and transplant research coordination. In 2010, she became the antimicrobial stewardship (ASP) corporate lead for Oakwood Hospital - Dearborn, then was promoted to clinical pharmacy manager at Beaumont Hospital, Dearborn (BHD). In this role, Hsaiky has focused on clinical and quality services, led ASP for Beaumont and is involved in system medication management, residency program strategies, research development and wellness. During her career, she has maintained research involvement, publishing and presenting locally, regionally and nationally.

Hsaiky has been a member of MSHP/MPA since 2018 and serves as co-chair of the MSHP Professional and Legal Affairs Committee. In addition, Hsaiky is a member of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacy (ASHP) and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP). She is a co-chair of the Inforum HealthcareNEXT Leadership Affinity Subcommittee and a member of the Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS) Subcommittee for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' (MDHHS) Surveillance for Healthcare Associated and Resistant Pathogens (SHARP). Hsaiky is an exemplar of leadership in health-system pharmacy.

Recipients receiving this award must be active in association work, be a member of MSHP and display leadership qualities. Hsaiky's award consists of a plaque and a gift of $100.

Nada M. Farhat, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP, is being honored as the 2022 MSHP Pharmacist of the Year for her outstanding achievements and for leadership that embodies a model for other healthcare professionals to follow.

Farhat has demonstrated steadfastness in advancing the role of ambulatory care pharmacists in health-system pharmacy practice. She is a clinical pharmacist specialist - outpatient primary care, transitions of care, anticoagulation at the Department of Pharmacy Innovations & Partnerships at Michigan Medicine, the clinical lead for the Michigan Institute for Care Management & Transformation, and an adjunct clinical instructor at the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. She earned her Bachelor of Health Sciences in 2012 at Wayne State and her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2015 from WSU Applebaum.

In addition to her day-to-day clinical role, she has demonstrated exemplary leadership within MPA and MSHP as co-chair of the MSHP Ambulatory Care Committee, contributor to the MSHP Monitor newsletter and presenter at the MPA Annual Convention & Exposition. Farhat has served on strategic planning committees and workgroups and is currently planning an MSHP dashboard performance workshop for 2023. She is also active in various national organizations, including the ACCP, American Pharmacists Association-Academy of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP), ASHP and the Arab American Pharmacist Association (AAPA). Farhat has served as a role model training students and residents on ambulatory care pharmacy practice, precepted numerous community events and served on multiple residency advisory committees, as well as authored and reviewed articles for prestigious medical journals. Farhat is a strong leader, professional role model and advocate for improving patient outcomes in Michigan.

Her award consists of a plaque and complimentary MSHP and Michigan Pharmacists Association (MPA) membership for one year.

The Henry Ford Health (HFH) Pharmacy Department has been chosen to receive this year's MSHP President's Award, which recognizes the commitment of a pharmacy professional, group of professionals or a pharmacy organization to advancing the theme and goal of the MSHP Board of Directors throughout the year. This year's theme was "Bridging the Gap." The HFH Pharmacy Department is being recognized for its role in preventing gaps in care at discharge.

HFH is an integrated health system composed of five acute care hospitals, three behavioral health facilities, and primary and urgent care centers. It has long been known for innovative and award-winning clinical pharmacy practice. The ASHP Foundation awarded the HFH PGY2 Infectious Diseases Pharmacy Residency Program the 2021 Pharmacy Residency Excellence Award. HFH was also recently awarded the Anticoagulation Forum TRAIN Grant and the Shields Health Solutions Awards Resident Research Grant.

HFH has continued its tradition of clinical pharmacy practice by focusing on transitions of care, which started with a pharmacist-directed anticoagulation service. Efforts expanded to include transitions-of-care consults for medication histories, adherence, access at discharge, patient education and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy optimization. HFH pharmacy implemented electronic referrals to improve handoff to other pharmacists in the health system, and it operates Meds to Beds and Medication Therapy Management programs. Its recent antimicrobial stewardship initiative consisted of pharmacist-driven antimicrobial prescribing at hospital discharge, which improved selection and length of therapy.

To enhance medication safety in transitions of care, HFH pharmacy implemented the Discharge Medication Cost Inquiry (DMCI) consult and associated workflow, establishing a standardized way to communicate medication access information. This innovative tool bridged a gap at HFH and provided a formal workflow for pharmacy to prevent gaps in care at discharge, a novel transitions-of-care model that can be implemented at other health systems.
