"The P&T Competition provides pharmacy students with an opportunity to understand managed care by allowing them to evaluate the clinical and economic data and make a formulary recommendation on specified drug," said Manuel, team leader and immediate past president of the Wayne State AMCP chapter. "The process allows students to understand their roles within a team and how they can develop their skills in this field. It is a one-of-a-kind competition that all pharmacy students should try to compete in at least once."

This year, 64 schools of pharmacy nationwide participated in the prestigious competition. Team Wayne State edged out the University of Michigan, which placed third overall. The University of Southern California was this year's winning team. Each of the teams created monographs and formulary placement recommendation for the study drug DAYVIGO (lemborexant) CIV tablets, which is an orexin receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of adult patients with insomnia characterized by difficulties with sleep onset or maintenance.

"This is a great achievement for our chapter," said Joseph Paul Javier, current president of AMCP at Wayne State. "Our local AMCP chapter is still young but has come a long way since it started almost two years ago. This achievement directly speaks to the talent and caliber of students of our university's PharmD program. We thank AMCP faculty advisor Dr. Kyle Burghardt and our competition advisors Dr. Vic Nguyen, Dr. Stacey Repotski and Dr. Zack Mueller for supporting our team and AMCP chapter through this process. From this foundation, our chapter looks forward to continuing to educate other student pharmacists about managed care pharmacy and furthering the AMCP mission of improving patient health by ensuring access to high-quality, cost-effective medication and other therapies."
