Tips from CAPS: Using affirmations to turn negative thoughts into positive feelings

By MSW Intern Charmain Allen

Affirmations are the thoughts that we tell ourselves, and they can have a significant impact on our life experience. Affirmations can be used as a tool for positivity, though your thoughts can be either positive or negative. Think positive, talk positive, feel positive

Negative words and thoughts will contribute to negative emotions and experiences, while positive thoughts will influence positive feelings and can change how we interpret life.

A force to be reckoned with

Imagine being forced to listen to a recording on constant repeat for years, with the words in the recording attacking and belittling you relentlessly. Can you imagine how you might feel after years of hearing that same recording?

Let's now picture having the power to remove that old recording and replace it with an encouraging and empowering one. This new recording was made just for you, with the intention of deleting all negative and destructive words from your mind. That is the power of positive affirmations!

Examples of positive affirmations

Many people read or repeat positive affirmations to themselves as part of therapeutic practice, spiritual practice or daily routine. Some examples of positive affirmations people tell themselves include:

  • I am strong enough.
  • I am full of goodwill for myself and others.
  • May I be safe and at peace.
  • My body is beautiful.
  • I might get knocked down but I will always get back up.
  • Find one that works for you!

"Every thought you think and every word you speak is an affirmation. You're using affirmations every moment, whether you know it or not." - Louise L. Hay
