PAS alumna-led organization for sexual assault victims wins award at MLK Tribute

2019 Arthur Johnson Community Leadership Award is presented to Kimberly Hurst for WC Safe.Kimberly Hurst, who earned her master's in physician assistant studies from the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences in 2001, was presented with a Dr. Arthur L. Johnson Community Leadership Award at Wayne State University's annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center.

Hurst is the founder and executive director of WC SAFE, the Wayne County Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner's Program. The organization provides acute medical-forensic exams and crisis intervention for sexual assault victims of all ages. In addition, WC SAFE's specially trained, trauma-informed staff provide both individual and group supportive counseling to survivors of sexual assault, as well as their supportive loved ones.

All services provided by WC SAFE are free and confidential.

The annual MLK Tribute brings together the metro Detroit community to celebrate and honor King's life and legacy. This year's featured guest was Emmy Award winning journalist and Atlantic staff writer Jemele Hill. The event also featured performances by the Renaissance Singers, the Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences Show Choir, and the InsideOut Detroit poetry program.

The 2019 Arthur L. Johnson Awards for Community Leadership were sponsored by AARP Michigan.
