New ASCP grant will upgrade pathologists' assistant bone pathology and dissection lab

Lou KramerAssistant Professor (Clinical) and Pathologists' Assistant Program Director Veralucia Mendes-Kramer was awarded a grant from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) to enhance the interdisciplinary teaching of bone pathology and dissection in the laboratory.

The ASCP Foundation Laboratory Science Program Director Educational Grant program helps laboratory science programs educate and empower future medical laboratory professionals.

The project funded by the grant will develop students' understanding of bone pathology by providing an environment in which bone specimens can be properly processed, dissected and sampled to yield the necessary histological samples for diagnosis. Upgrades will create a learning space that reflects, with all the necessary tools and equipment, that of the hospital base gross pathology laboratory.

The master of pathologists' assistant degree program is part of the Wayne State University Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
