In April 2021, the Wayne State University Department of Athletics' annual Academic Recognition event was held in three phases at WSU's Doris J. & Donald L. Duchene, Sr. Athletic Facility in order for social distancing to occur.

Nine students earned the Deans' Award for having the highest cumulative grade-point average among all student-athletes in their particular college. Mortuary Science senior and track and field thrower Maddie Schmoker was the recipient in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences.
