RTT program will Race for the Cure Oct. 2, and you can too!
On Sunday, Oct. 2, the WSU Applebaum Radiation Therapy Technology program team will participate in the 2022 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Detroit. Organized by Program Director Jeannetta Greer, the team invites the college family to join them at the race or support their cause with a monetary donation. Both can be done through the RTT program's Race for the Cure webpage.
"The Race for the Cure is very important to me as my grandmother was the first woman I knew of having breast cancer," Greer said. "I loved my grandmother dearly and it is because of my desire to want to help women like her I became a radiation therapist. I also felt our students would benefit from participating in a community service project that related to the field that they are pursuing."
The RTT team's fundraising goal is $1,000. All money raised will fund research to discover more effective breast cancer treatments, as well as vital patient support to help connect people with things like screenings, diagnostics, treatment assistance and more. The Komen organization aims to reduce the number of breast cancer deaths in the US by 50% in the next four years.
"I am so excited for our program to be part of this event, and I hope to have lots of participation from those in the college able to attend. We race for our family at home and our family here at the college," Greer said.
The Race for the Cure begins at Milliken State Park on the Detroit Riverfront and is a 5K route, which is approximately 3.1 miles; there is also a shorter route option (approximately 1 mile). Participants may choose to walk or run either route. The opening ceremony begins on Sunday, Oct. 2, at 8 a.m., with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m.
