RTT community care goes beyond cancer
The junior students in the WSU Applebaum Radiation Therapy Technology Program are taught a lot about the four Cs: Caring, Compassion, Commitment and Communication. These students have a future in treating cancer patients, but they also are extremely knowledgeable regarding the impact COVID on our community and how the 4Cs can help.
Students enrolled in the course Therapeutic Issues in Radiation Therapy focus on ethical issues, legal issues, as well as how to provide emotional and holistic support to patients. In the past, class projects consisted of volunteering time and projects within hospitals.
"COVID has not allowed this, but it did not detour our efforts," said Assistant Clinical Professor Alisa Kagen. "We decided to become creative and contact various food banks to see what we could do remotely to help our community."
Brightmoor Connection Food Pantry, located at 16621 Lahser Rd. in Detroit, was desperate for gently used clothing. Reverend Roslyn Bouier, the organization's executive director, was happy that the junior RTT class decided to help with the collection of clothing for the food pantry.
"Our students and facility want to make a difference in not only cancer care, but in our community," Kagen said. "COVID has caused a lot of hardship and if we can help out in anyway, we are so thrilled to make a difference!"
