Zhengping Yi leading Tour de Cure team for diabetes research

Tour De Cure on a sunny day in 2019
Pharmaceutical Sciences Professor Zhengping Yi and Chair George Corcoran at the 2019 Tour De Cure Michigan on Belle Isle. The event will look much different this year, but the funds raised are more important than ever as diabetic patients have a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Zhengping Yi has been serving as captain of the Wayne Care Tour de Cure Michigan team annually since 2011. This year, the event will be virtual, giving even more people the chance to participate and help raise funds for diabetes research.

You are invited to join the Wayne Care corporate team for the first-ever virtual Tour de Cure Michigan, which will be held on August 30, 2020. Tour de Cure is the signature fundraising event of the American Diabetes Association, which raises money to improve the lives of people with diabetes now and improve the future of diabetes.

This year's virtual Tour de Cure offers the opportunity to join Yi's team wherever you are. Whether it’s on your stationary bike, treadmill, or on a social distance walk around the block, your participation will help keep the ADA's mission moving by raising funds for lifesaving research, education and advocacy. If you can't join the team, please consider supporting this important initiative with a donation.

Diabetes is the most common endocrine disorder and the leading cause of heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, nontraumatic lower-limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults. In the United States, 34.2 million individuals (10.5% of the nation's population) have diabetes, leading to more than $327 billion in health care costs and lost wages annually per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Alarmingly, projections indicate that the diabetes prevalence will increase to ~30% by 2050.

Diabetic patients have a higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19, which has infected more than 1.2 million and killed more than 72,000 individuals in the United States in just 3 months, according to the CDC
