Jozy Hayek wins Wayne State Outstanding Contributor Award

Jozy Hayek

Through its annual Academic Recognition Ceremony, Wayne State honors faculty and staff who have gone above and beyond in their service to the university’s mission. Included this year is Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Academic Services Officer II Jozy Hayek, who received the Outstanding Contributor Award. This award is presented in recognition of significant accomplishments during the previous academic year and emerging leadership among junior academic staff. Hayek was one of two staff members across the entire university to earn this award this year.

Hayek earned a master’s in public administration from the University of Michigan–Flint in 2014. Her role primarily focuses on admissions and recruiting for the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program, establishing pipelines and affiliation agreements with colleges and universities, and supporting student activities and program committees.

"Jozy is a most deserved recipient of this award. I am extremely pleased that her outstanding work here in Pharmacy is being recognized,” said Associate Dean of Pharmacy Richard Lucarotti. “She serves our students and programs with a professional demeanor, positive attitude, and collegial manner.”

Hayek is committed to providing excellent advising to prospective and current students and implementing new initiatives efficiently. In addition to her responsibilities, Hayek is a member of the Advising Training Academy Grant Committee, a volunteer member of several committees in the Commission on the Status of Women (COSW), and an elected Co-Chair of the AAUP-AFT Academic Staff Steering Committee (ASSC).

“Jozy is well known to us for her excellent coordination and support of the PharmD admissions process, big student events including PharmPhest, P1 orientation and the White Coat Ceremony,” Lucarotti said. “Maybe less well known, Jozy has significantly expanded student recruitment initiatives across Michigan and Ontario, partnering with universities to attract promising undergraduate students to our college. She has also intensified our recruitment of undergraduate students from Wayne State. One key aspect of this effort was to establish a mentoring program that matches interested Wayne State undergraduate students with current pharmacy students.”

Hayek aims to expand her professional development by being an active member of several professional organizations and attending local, regional, and national conferences. She served as a presentation proposal evaluator for the 2018 ACPA-MI Annual Conference and a session facilitator at the 2020 Great Lakes Regional Success Conference. She also presented at the 2018 Wayne State University Academic Advising Summit and the 2019 NACADA Region 5 Conference.

Hayek will continue her service to the university and professional organizations by assisting with the 2020 NACADA Region 5 Conference proposal review, holding the chair position of the AAUP-AFT ASSC in 2020-2021, and applying to co-chair the COSW Gender and Equity Committee.

Although the university’s in-person Academic Recognition Ceremony has been postponed indefinitely, honorees will be celebrated virtually on May 4. The program is available here.
