PT Professor Joseph Roche to present research on muscle wasting

Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Joseph Roche will present "Is Dystrophic Muscle Wasting a Result of Premature Aging?" at the Wayne State University Institute of Gerontology on Tuesday, Dec. 4, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Roche will present data from his lab and others to support the idea that premature senescence of muscle tissue might underlie muscle wasting in the context of muscular dystrophies. He will make the case that dystrophic muscle wasting must be viewed more as an overuse syndrome than as muscle atrophy, and highlight why this distinction is more relevant now than ever.
    
Roche earned his Ph.D. in Physical Rehabilitation Science (Rehabilitation Physiology Track) in 2008 from the University of Maryland, Baltimore, where he also completed his post-doctoral fellowship-training in muscle biology. Since joining Wayne State in 2014, he set up an independent research program in Neuromuscular Regenerative Rehabilitation. His research focuses on how to prevent and reverse muscle loss due to muscular dystrophies, aging and trauma.
