LKS to present lecture by Sally Rafie, pharmacy-based contraception expert

Sally Rafie, the Birth Control PharmacistThe Omicron Chapter of Lambda Kappa Sigma is hosting a lecture by Sally Rafie, PharmD, of University of California San Diego Health, who will discuss the pharmacist’s emerging role in expanding access to contraception. Rafie was instrumental in establishing legislation and protocols for pharmacists to prescribe birth control in California, and she has a long record of research and advocacy in the field of reproductive health.

The lecture takes place Tuesday, March 19, from 6-7 p.m. in the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences auditorium. One CE credit is available for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, provided at a discount by the Detroit Medical Center Department of Pharmacy Services. The cost to attend is $10; after CE costs are paid, all profits will be donated to Project HOPE, the philanthropy organization for LKS that does humanitarian work during major disasters around the world.

Rafie is a pharmacist specialist at UC San Diego Health, where she sees patients for contraception and more at the Women’s Health Services Clinic. She founded the Birth Control Pharmacist project, which provides education and training, implementation assistance, resources and clinical updates to pharmacists prescribing contraception, as well as engages in advocacy, research and policy efforts to expand the role of pharmacists in family planning. She also founded the Pharmacists Clinic, the first pharmacist-run clinic in a community pharmacy, where she provides contraception and other clinical services. Rafie also is an assistant clinical professor of health sciences at the University of California San Diego Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and she helped develop the California statewide protocol for self-administered hormonal contraceptives adopted by the Board of Pharmacy.

Organized by My Tran and Professor Mary Beth O’Connell, this event is part of Hygeia Day, a national initiative established by Lambda Kappa Sigma to celebrate the profession of pharmacy, and to advance pharmacy knowledge and skills.
