First and second-year PharmD students encouraged to join learning community

All P1 and P2 PharmD students are invited to join the Student Pharmacist Learning Community, offered by the Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to optimize student success during their first two years of their professional program.

The learning community is operated by P3 PharmD students chosen for their academic, professional and leadership abilities. This year, PharmD student Bianca Aprilliano is the learning community's lead mentor; additional peer mentors include students Katherine Dada and Shivan Patel. The faculty coordinator is Professor (Clinical) of Pharmacy Practice Victoria Tutag Lehr.

Each peer mentor maintains office hours when they are available to answer questions and provide one-on-one help to participants. Office hours are held in WSU Applebaum Room 0340 during the fall and winter semesters:

  • Mondays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Katherine Dada
  • Wednesdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Shivan Patel
  • Thursdays, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Bianca Aprillano
  • Learning community mentors are trained at Wayne State's Academic Success Center and committed to serve as peer resources about the program and the pharmacy profession, including assisting P1s and P2s with study skills, strategies for selecting professional organizations and leadership experiences, and general information on balancing the demands of the program with personal and social life.

The learning community also hosts extra review sessions prior to exams. Tutors from the pharmacy honor society, Rho Chi, will partner with the learning community mentors to ensure that all students have academic support. Rho Chi is comprised of students whose GPA is within the top 20% of their class.

The program, in operation since 2009 and evolving over time to best meet students' needs, is supported by the WSU Applebaum Department of Pharmacy Practice, Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Dean's Office.

Interested first- and second-year students should plan to attend the Student Pharmacist Learning Community kickoff orientation session on Thursday, Sept. 26, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in WSU Applebaum Room 4545, 259 Mack Ave.
