The Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences announced that Associate Professor Anna B. Moszczynska is the recipient of both a 2019-20 Career Development Chair Award, as well as a Sabbatical Leave Award for the fall and winter semesters of 2019-20.

Up to seven Career Development Chair Awards are presented university-wide to recently tenured faculty members to stimulate research at a formative point in their mid-career development.

Moszczynska is a leading neurosciences scholar working to understand and prevent drug addiction. She has developed a flourishing research program focusing on the role of protein ubiquitination during neurotoxicity produced by the widely abused psychostimulant, methamphetamine. In 2010, Moszczynska brought a $0.75M NIH National Institute of Drug Abuse award to Wayne State. She quickly received another NIH R01 grant for $1.7M to expand this promising research project, making her the most highly funded faculty member who had not yet reached tenure.

Moszczynska's high impact research has earned her broad recognition as a national and international opinion leader, with a citation index double that of the average associate professor. In 2015, she received the highly prestigious Junior Faculty Award from the Academy of Scholars, recognizing her as one of the top young researchers at Wayne State.

Moszczynska will combine the Career Development Chair Award, which provides $16,500 in research support and a $2,500 honorarium, with her Sabbatical Leave Award to acquire and apply new cutting-edge technologies to her addiction research, including ATAC sequencing and associated bioinformatic analyses, RNA-seq and L1 location analyses using TEtranscripts software, and an expanded range of other bioinformatic tools.
